BRANDING
HOW TO SUCCEED

Livestock Branding

Overview

Livestock branding is the technique of adding a specified insignia onto livestock, such as domesticated animals reared to produce food or fibre, but excluding poultry or fish, for the purpose of identifying its owner.

Originally, the branding of livestock referred to the method of hot branding. The term branding has now been extended to include other techniques, such as freeze branding.

There are, however, other methods used to identify livestock, such as:

Ear or inner lip tattoos, which are permanent markings made by inserting ink into the layers of skin of the animal in order to change the pigment so assisting in its identification or branding

Ear tags, which are metal or plastic objects that carry the identification number of the particular animal. They are applied using an ear tag applicator, also known as pliers

Ear marking, refers to cuts or some form of marks in the ears of sheep, pigs and cattle in order to establish the age, gender or ownership of the animal. This particular method dates back to the 16th century.

Ear tags that contain a microchip are called Electronic ear tags. An RFID, or radiofrequency identification chip, is one that can be applied to or incorporated into an animal in order to identify it using radio waves. There are some tags that can be used up to a distance of many metres, and often out of sight of the person using the equipment.

A paint brand refers to the semi-permanent paint markings that are used to identify sheep. The method of branding used in the days of the wild-west evolved into a complex system of marking which is still in use today.
